Main Street's quiet AI adoption outpaces the enterprise
Surveys show small businesses adopting AI tools faster than large firms — no procurement committees, no pilots, just owners handing chores to software that works.

DENVER — The fastest-adopting segment of the AI economy has no chief AI officer. Small businesses are taking up AI tools at rates outpacing the enterprise, national surveys show, applying them to the chores that eat their evenings: bookkeeping, marketing copy, scheduling, supplier email.
The adoption pattern inverts every previous technology wave, researchers note. There is no integration project and no training budget — the tools speak plain language, cost less than a phone plan and pay for themselves in the first saved hour.
Economists watching productivity statistics say the diffuse, uncounted nature of these gains may explain a puzzle: aggregate numbers that keep undershooting what adoption data suggests should be visible by now.
