AI now writes the majority of new code at large software firms, survey finds

An industry-wide survey says AI coding assistants produce over half of newly committed code at big software companies, redefining what junior engineering roles look like.

SEATTLE — More than half of newly committed code at large software companies is now written by AI assistants, according to the sector's most comprehensive annual survey, published Tuesday — up from roughly a fifth two years ago.

The shift is redefining engineering roles: respondents ranked code review, system design and precise specification as their most valued skills, with line-by-line authorship falling out of the top five for the first time in the survey's history.

Quality data remains contested. Defect rates per shipped feature are flat or improved at most firms, but researchers note that AI-authored code is reviewed more heavily — masking, or perhaps constituting, the productivity gain.
