AI tutors deliver in the largest classroom study yet — with a catch
A multi-country trial finds personalised AI tutoring lifts learning outcomes significantly, but only where teachers actively orchestrate its use.

NAIROBI — The largest randomised study of AI tutoring to date, spanning 1,400 classrooms across nine countries, delivered its verdict this week: significant learning gains, concentrated almost entirely in classrooms where teachers actively directed how the software was used.
Students with orchestrated AI tutoring advanced the equivalent of several additional months of learning per year, with the largest gains among previously struggling students. Classrooms where the software simply replaced instruction showed little benefit — and occasional declines.
Education ministries in several participating countries announced scaled rollouts — coupled, notably, with teacher-training budgets larger than the software contracts themselves.
