CHICAGO — The least glamorous corner of the corporation is becoming its most automated. Invoice matching, expense audit, onboarding paperwork, procurement follow-ups: at hundreds of large firms these queues are now worked end-to-end by AI agents, with employees repositioned as reviewers of exceptions the machines escalate.
Consultancies tracking deployments report the pattern that finally unlocked adoption: agents that document every action and escalate on low confidence, making their work auditable in the way regulators and CFOs require.
Labour economists see a familiar shape: task-level displacement inside roles rather than headline layoffs — with the open question being whether the oversight jobs that remain are ladders or landings.
